Estimating What Matcha Should Cost
Prices vary widely enough that a single benchmark is unhelpful. Understanding what drives them is more practical.
What sets the price
Shaded cultivation Covers over the field while shoots develop, light managed to harvest. Weeks of labour and materials. This is the first branch point.
First flush Tencha comes mainly from the first harvest, grown on nutrients the roots stored over winter — higher theanine.
Hand versus machine picking Hand-picking allows selection of shoot condition and costs more.
Sorting precision Stems and veins removed after drying. More thorough sorting lowers yield.
Milling method Stone mills manage roughly 40 g per hour. Machine milling is faster and coarser.
For sweetened products
Blend ratio enters as an additional factor. More sugar lowers cost.
Ingredient lists run by weight, so matcha, sugar versus sugar, matcha indicates the direction.
Convert to per-serving
Comparing by weight is less useful than per serving.
cost per serving = purchase price ÷ (package weight ÷ per-serving amount)
At 20 g, one kilogram gives 50 servings. ¥5,000 per kilogram is ¥100 per serving.
Lattes add milk; takeaway adds packaging. Powder price alone misleads.
Expect movement
Japan's 2025 green tea exports roughly doubled in value. Raw material conditions are unsettled.

Cheap is conditional
Low cost per serving means nothing if the package does not clear.
Post-opening guideline: two weeks to a month. Stock that does not turn over gets served in declining condition.
