Matcha for Seasonal Gift-Giving

Chugen and Seibo each have their own requirements.

Summer

Chugen favours items suggesting coolness.

Sweetened matcha spread as a cold drink from the mid-1950s, alongside household refrigeration. Kyoto and Osaka sweet shops and tea retailers established it as a summer fixture.

Mixing it into water and chilling is all it takes, which suits the season. It has long sat alongside jellies and mizu-yokan as a way of sending something cool.

Winter

Seibo favours things that serve warm.

The same powder dissolves into hot water or warm milk. Heat amplifies sweetness, so less powder satisfies.

Working in both directions is an advantage of the format.

Shelf life matters here

Seasonal gifts arrive in batches and may not be used immediately.

Unopened best-before dates typically run six months to a year, at room temperature. Requiring no refrigerator or freezer space is itself useful during those periods.

Recipients are not always well known

Chugen and Seibo often go to people whose preferences you do not know in detail.

Items with multiple preparation options fail less often. A powder that works with water or milk, at a strength the recipient chooses, sits in that category.

Sizing

Household size determines what is appropriate.

At 20 g per serving, 300 g is 15 cups. A large package to someone living alone will lose quality before it is finished — the post-opening guideline is two weeks to a month.

Individual sticks avoid that problem.

Presentation

Seasonal gifts are judged partly on packaging.

But matcha fades under light. A window showing the contents looks good and works against the product on a shelf.

Recipients who need care

Caffeine and sugar are both present. Depending on the recipient, a check is warranted.

Mentioning that strength is adjustable when handing it over is a small courtesy.
